ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state Environmental Facilities Corp. has approved five interest-free loans totaling $28 million to upgrade drinking water and wastewater systems in the Hudson Valley, Central New York, the Capital Region and the North Country.

Loans were approved Thursday for wastewater collection improvements in the villages of Saranac Lake and Wappingers Falls.

The EFC Board also approved 30-year loans for wastewater system upgrades in the Madison County town of Sullivan and for recently completed improvements to drinking-water systems in the Jefferson County town of Hounsfield and the Rensselaer County village of Hoosick Falls.

The agency says the five municipalities will save nearly $6 million in borrowing costs with the loans.

Last month, EFC modified its hardship loan program, making it easier for smaller communities to obtain interest-free loans.
