NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City teacher whose students grow food in the classroom is among 10 finalists for a $1 million global teaching prize.

Teacher Stephen Ritz of Public School 55 in the Bronx is the only New Yorker and one of three Americans among the 10 finalists for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize announced Friday.

Ritz has pioneered a program to grow food as part of the curriculum.

His students grow food on a “green wall” in the classroom and in outdoor gardens.

The Varkey Foundation is the philanthropic arm of GEMS Education, a Dubai-based company founded by Indian-born entrepreneur Sunny Varkey.

The company operates a network of private schools around the world.

The winner of the prize will be announced March 15 in Dubai.
