NORTH CANTON, Ohio (AP) - Law enforcement officials in northeast Ohio are investigating the source of a middle school shooting threat made online.

Police in North Canton say about half of the city’s middle school students stayed home Thursday after an anonymous shooting threat was posted on social media site Ask.fm.

Police say the student who received the threat posted an image of the message on his Instagram account Wednesday night. Another student’s parent saw the image and reported it. Police say they interviewed and checked the locker of the boy who posted the photo but found nothing out of the ordinary.

North Canton Police have asked the FBI and Ohio Homeland Security to help trace the initial threat.

School officials say students were permitted to carry cellphones Thursday to contact their parents.
