CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - An acclaimed poet has been forced to cancel an upcoming lecture at Southern Illinois University due to health issues leading to her hospitalization.

Nikki Giovanni was scheduled to speak on Feb. 19 as part of Black History Month activities at the school. She was expected to delve into the topics of civil rights, activism and social issues during the presentation, titled “Human by the Grace of God: A View of Diversity.”

The Southern Illinoisan (https://bit.ly/1KSQP9l ) reports school officials are hoping to reschedule Giovanni’s appearance later this year.

Giovanni is the winner of the Langston Hughes Medal and NAACP Image awards. She has written dozens of books and volumes of poetry.

The school’s director of the Center for Inclusive Excellence says officials are working to invite other notable speakers to campus this month.
