WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia police say they believe a robbery suspect fatally shot himself after exchanging gunfire with officers.

Metropolitan Police Lt. Sean Conboy said Friday that officers came upon a street robbery in the popular 14th Street corridor of northwest Washington around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Conboy says when officers tried to detain the suspect, he pulled a gun and began fleeing.

At some point, Conboy says the suspect and police exchanged gunfire. The suspect was found soon after with a gunshot wound to the head. No officers were injured.

Police were still trying to determine whether any bullets fired by police hit the man, whose identity hasn’t been released.

A number of streets in the area of the shooting were still closed off Friday morning as police conducted an investigation.
