SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Police have shot and killed a suspected car thief during a chase on a San Bernardino freeway.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday on northbound Interstate 215. It snarled traffic on the key route from Southern California to Las Vegas as travelers sought to leave for the three-day weekend.

Police Lt. Richard Lawhead tells the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1JaXkZt ) that officers began chasing the suspected thief on city streets.

The SUV then moved onto the freeway.

Lawhead says the driver hit several police cars, including one head-on, and was shot by officers as he tried to ram another patrol car.

The driver died at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

No officers were hurt.
