WILCOX, Pa. (AP) - State police say an 81-year-old driver and her 92-year-old passenger have been killed after running a stop sign and being hit by a tractor-trailer while trying to merge onto a central Pennsylvania highway.

Troopers from the Ridgway barracks in Elk County say the driver, 81-year-old Vera Johnson and her passenger, 92-year-old Rose Swanson, were killed in the crash about 1:10 p.m. Thursday.

Both women were from Wilcox and were traveling south on Route 219 before trying to merge onto northbound Route 321 in Jones Township.

Police say they ran a stop sign and were hit by a truck coming northbound on Route 219.

The tractor-trailer driver wasn’t hurt.

Route 321 was closed for about four hours after the crash.

The crash scene is about 120 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
