LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces police are searching for an armed robbery suspect after he failed to turn up in a sweep of a shopping mall.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/1EbigJc) that the Mesilla Valley Mall was evacuated and closed for about four hours Friday afternoon while authorities searched for the suspect.

Police say a man walked into CortHaus Boutique just before 4 p.m. and displayed a handgun before demanding cash from the register. No one was injured and he then fled on foot.

The robbery led mall officials to alert businesses to close. Numerous shoppers either evacuated or sought refuge in nearby stores on lockdown.

Stores were allowed to reopen by 7 p.m.

The suspect is described as being Hispanic, 5-foot-8, in his mid-30s and weighing between 160 and 180 pounds.
