FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - An investigation is under way into the crash of a Virginia Department of Corrections van that killed the driver and injured several prisoners.

The crash occurred Saturday in King George County. Police said the van ran off State Route 3 and crashed into trees.

The Free Lance-Star (https://bit.ly/1zF7lDj) reports that the driver, 33-year-old Dennis Toombs, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he died.

Toombs was transporting nine prisoners from a job site in Westmoreland County to the Stafford Men’s Diversion Center.

Prisoners told police that most of them were sleeping when the crash took place. Several were hospitalized overnight.
