MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission is accepting public comment on a proposal to close a dangerous section of the Bitterroot River during high water.

The proposal would allow the state to close all or a portion of the river in the Corvallis area, where a number of boating accidents, including a fatality in 2013, have occurred.

Under the proposal, the state would be required to reopen the dam in the area when water recedes to a certain level, or by July 10.

The proposed rule is intended to serve as an interim solution, while the state and other stakeholders raise funds to modify the dam to make it safer.

Comments must be received by March 9.

The commission will consider the proposed rule at its meeting in April.
