Fox 5 San Diego briefly portrayed President Obama as a sex-assault suspect on its 10 p.m. news report Friday.

News anchor Kathleen Bade was reporting on the district attorney’s decision not to file rape charges against 20-year-old Francisco Sousa due to a lack of evidence. At 10:04 p.m., viewers heard Ms. Bade say, “The only suspect in a sex assault at SDSU will not be charged,” as a picture of Mr. Obama appeared with the legend “NO CHARGES,” the Times of San Diego reported.

Mike Wille, an assignment editor, said the newsroom noticed the mistake immediately.

“Yeah, there was an accident when they had an over-the-shoulder” display, he told the Times. “It wasn’t on purpose.”

Mr. Wille said no one called the station to complain about the Obama picture, which stayed on screen for about five seconds.

Asked why there was no on-air acknowledgment or apology for the mistake, Mr. Wille told the Times: “They really don’t do that when it’s a small thing like that.”
