BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Police say North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler has been arrested on a preliminary assault charge and released after posting bond.

A statement from the Bismarck Police Department says Baesler was taken into custody after officers responded to a home early Sunday morning due to a report of a domestic assault. Police say a 48-year-old man with a visible injury told officers that Baesler assaulted him.

Police say officers then located the 45-year-old Baesler and arrested her on a charge of simple assault. She was booked in the Burleigh County Detention Center.

A detention officer says Baesler was released Sunday night after posting a $150 cash bond. She couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Jail records showed a court hearing is set for Tuesday.

Baesler was elected in November 2012.
