MONTAGUE, N.J. (AP) - State police say a northwestern New Jersey man committed suicide shortly after he violently attacked his parents.

But it’s not yet known what sparked the incident at the Montague home early Sunday.

NJ.com (https://bit.ly/1CwySvd) reports that troopers were sent to the Route 206 home around 3:30 a.m. for a reported domestic violence incident. The parents told them their 34-year-old son had tried to shoot them with a rifle.

The woman was shot in the face, but the father wasn’t struck. However, they told troopers the son eventually cut the father with a saw and then ran to a backyard shed, where he hanged himself.

Both parents were being treated at a hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The names of the couple and their son were not released.
