COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case involving forged checks from the sheriff’s office’s own account.

Officials say several people started using an account number and cashing forged checks from checks inmates receive when they are released from the Criminal Justice Center.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (https://tinyurl.com/mysbac2 ) detective Amanda Kelsey says the forgers used their real names and made the checks out to themselves.

All six have been arrested and charged with identity theft, forgery and theft.
