MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s only state-funded boat dock for both commercial and recreational fishermen has opened in Manns Harbor.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, reported (https://bit.ly/1yNIUTV) the $5.7 million facility offers 600 feet of bulkhead, three launching ramps, a platform for unloading gear and fish catch, shoreline docks and other amenities.

N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Director Gordon Myers says a lot of people were concerned that the state would never get commercial and recreational fishermen to work together. Associations from the two groups lobby for competing laws, while the fishermen are often at odds while fishing the same species or working in the same waters.

The 13.5-acre property sits at the base of the William B. Umstead Memorial Bridge along part of U.S. 64. The dock opened last week.
