MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 76-year-old man was arrested Monday in the fatal shooting of his great-grandchildren’s father outside their suburban Detroit home.

Deputies responded to a 911 call for shots fired and found the body of a 31-year-old Detroit man in the snow in Macomb Township, according to Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.

The older man was near the body when deputies arrived.

“He did not resist. He was standing outside,” Wickersham said. “The gun was on the ground.”

The Detroit man was in a relationship with older man’s granddaughter. The woman and the couple’s three children - ages 11 and younger - live at the home, north of Detroit. The victim arrived at the house Monday to pick up one of his children.

“Upon his arrival, the 76-year-old male went and met him outside,” said Wickersham, who added that the older man was armed with a handgun.

The older man’s wife and granddaughter called 911 after hearing shots. Investigators were trying to determine if an argument preceded the shooting.

“We’re talking to the other family members,” Wickersham said. “We’re trying to get a sense of what might have been going on in all of their relationships, and what may have caused this event.”

The names of the victim and suspect were not immediately released Monday.
