ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for a federal safety audit at a highway intersection where a tractor-trailer crashed into a restaurant, killing a woman inside.

He’s asking the Federal Highway Administration to work with the state Department of Transportation in conducting the audit at the intersection of Route 96B and Route 79 in Ithaca.

Schumer says Monday that the audit will add key technical expertise to an effort already underway by the Tompkins County Truck Safety Committee.

In June, a tractor-trailer hauling cars lost control and crashed into Simeon’s in Ithaca Commons. A woman was killed and five others were injured. The trucker was ticketed for having inadequate brakes.
