FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Brent Sass has won the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://bit.ly/1AMr0Xi) he crossed the finish line in downtown Fairbanks at 10:52 p.m. Monday. Sass is from Eureka.

He left the Two Rivers checkpoint two minutes behind defending champion Allen Moore but passed him on the trail.

The race covers 1,000 miles of rugged and unforgiving terrain.

Sass had a nearly 10-hour lead over Moore but lost it when he slept through his alarm.

Sass will get nearly $30,000 for the win and 4 ounces of gold nuggets for being the first musher to the halfway point of Dawson City, Yukon.
