HOUSTON (AP) - A homeless man charged with arson after fire damaged an Islamic center in Houston says the blaze was an accident as he tried to stay warm.
Jail records show 55-year-old Darryl Ferguson was being held without bond Tuesday. No attorney information was listed for Ferguson, who was arrested Monday after rolling up on a bicycle to talk to on-scene investigators.
Nobody was hurt in the blaze early Friday at a storage building for the Quba (KOH’-buh) Islamic Institute. The site was unoccupied.
Ferguson told reporters Monday night, as he was led away by officers, that the fire was accidental and he was trying to keep warm.
The Texas office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations seeks an investigation into whether the fire was a hate crime.
