DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - The restoration of Southside Virginia tobacco barns is entering its second year.

A project of Preservation Virginia, the barns are being repaired and preserved in Virginia’s Pittsylvania and Halifax counties and North Carolina’s Caswell County.

Danville’s JTI Leaf Services provided a $100,000 grant for the group to repair 15 old tobacco barns in 2014 - five in each county.

The tobacco barns preservation project also includes workshops and an oral history project raising awareness of the barns’ history.

Besides the preservation aspect, the repairs have created jobs and other revenue from the purchase of supplies to do the repairs.
