BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - An A-League match between the Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory was postponed Friday over safety concerns surrounding the effects a tropical cyclone on the Queensland state coast.

The decision was made by Football Federation Australia, which was acting on advice from the Queensland government and Queensland Police. A revised date was not announced.

Cyclone Marcia hit the Queensland central coast about 650 kilometers (about 400 miles) north of Brisbane early Friday.

Torrential rain, high winds and storm surges in the ocean and rivers were expected to created dangerous situations for the public as far south as Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The storm was also expected to place in doubt Saturday’s Cricket World Cup match between Australia and Bangladesh at the Gabba ground in Brisbane.
