SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - Discovery Communications Inc. (DISCA) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter profit of $250 million.

The Silver Spring, Maryland-based company said it had profit of 38 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for amortization costs, came to 43 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 41 cents per share.

The operator of cable TV channels such as TLC and Animal Planet posted revenue of $1.68 billion in the period, which fell short of Street forecasts. Analysts expected $1.71 billion, according to Zacks.

Discovery shares have fallen 10 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has increased 2 percent. The stock has dropped 62 percent in the last 12 months.
