PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed a businessman who has never worked in government as the new director of the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

Ducey named Tim Jeffries to the post overseeing the massive department on Wednesday. An interim director has overseen DES since former Director Clarence Carter resigned the day Ducey took office.

Jeffries founded a Scottsdale-based executive consulting firm and served in various senior business posts at companies in Arizona, California, and Colorado. He is on the board of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The department oversees more than 40 safety net programs.
