KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) - A 21-year-old Evergreen man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberate homicide in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

Flathead County officials say Brandon Lee Walter Newberry was booked into jail Wednesday.

Court records say during the 911 call Tuesday morning Newberry could be heard in the background screaming “it’s my fault, it’s my fault.”

Sheriff Chuck Curry says an autopsy indicates the boy died of a laceration of the small intestine after being hit multiple times in the stomach.

The boy’s mother told deputies that Newberry had been watching the child while she worked. She said the boy had been vomiting since Feb. 12, suggesting the assault may have occurred as early as Feb. 11.

Newberry is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Feb. 26.
