NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Federal authorities say two insect pests have been found in shipments at the Port of Norfolk since last fall.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists found a Khapra beetle in a shipment of split lentils and spices from the United Arab Emirates on Jan. 30. Two other Khapra beetles were discovered in November 2014 in shipments of organic soybeans from India.

The agency says in a news release that a plane tree bug was found in a shipment of ceramic tiles from Italy on Dec. 30, 2014. A national pest interception database confirmed on Wednesday that it’s the first discovery of the invasive insect in the region.

Since Oct. 1, 2014, agriculture specialists have made more than 50 interceptions of other invasive insects and weeds at the port.
