CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada lawmakers heard details of a bill that would cap the amount required for a bond in a civil lawsuit.

Republican Sen. Michael Roberson presented SB134 on Thursday to the Senate Judiciary Committee. It would cap the amount required on a civil lawsuit bond at $50 million for large businesses and $1 million for small businesses.

Roberson said businesses that are the target of lawsuits can often suffer deeply when forced to pay out significant sums and argued that his bill would give them leeway while they go through the appeals process.

Roberson said the current system in which judges determine the bail amount was hurting businesses.

Several business groups testified in favor of the bill, saying it would help during the appeals process.
