NEW YORK (AP) - New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is condemning former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s comments about President Barack Obama’s patriotism.

Giuliani, a Republican, said Wednesday that Obama “wasn’t brought up” to love his country.

De Blasio, a Democrat, said Thursday that the comments were “pitiful.”

He added that they were a “cheap political trick.” He says Giuliani’s remarks were “very, very low, even for him.”

Giuliani’s comments were made at a private New York dinner attended by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate.

De Blasio called for Walker to repudiate the comments. Walker has not addressed whether he agrees with Giuliani.

De Blasio is one of several prominent Democrats to assail Giuliani’s remarks.

Giuliani’s comments were reported by Politico.
