PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state’s labor department has asked for a police investigation into allegations that one or more employees committed fraud.

The Department of Labor and Training said Thursday it referred a complaint involving possible employee criminal conduct to the Rhode Island State Police. The department says the alleged misconduct involves one or more employees in the unemployment insurance division.

The department says a manager noticed accounting irregularities during a routine quarterly audit on Feb. 13. It says an internal investigation found evidence of possible wrongdoing by one or more workers.

Agency Director Scott Jensen says even one instance of alleged fraud is too many. He says the department’s internal procedures to catch potential fraudulent and criminal activity are working.
