PITTSBURGH (AP) - Arctic cold is closing schools in Pittsburgh, Erie and hundreds of other Pennsylvania communities and forcing a state university to postpone its cutest couple competition.

Edinboro University cancelled classes Thursday, along with the couples’ event. The school outside Erie is urging students to stay inside during the extreme cold and wind chill.

Slippery Rock University, between Erie and Pittsburgh, says it’s starting classes two hours late Thursday.

Pittsburgh Schools Superintendent Linda Lane is urging students to read about black history during their day off to celebrate Black History Month.

A wind chill advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday until noon Friday for many western Pennsylvania counties.

Forecasters say they expect temperatures of 11 below to 6 above zero and wind chills of 10 to 24 below zero.
