LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has established the Middle-Eastern American Affairs Commission to reflect the growing diversity of those in Michigan with roots in the Middle East.

Snyder on Wednesday signed an executive order creating the commission. It will replace the Michigan Council on Arab and Chaldean American Affairs, which was created by executive order in 2013.

In a statement, Snyder says the: “The Middle-Eastern American community is growing in our state and this reorganization will help ensure Michiganders from multiple backgrounds have the best opportunities to actively work together.”

The 15-member commission will work within the Department of Civil Rights to monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations to the governor and the department. Members also will work to enhance economic opportunity, prevent discrimination and spread awareness.
