BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Police in Brattleboro say a school with 27 elementary-age kids inside was locked down after a burglary suspect entered the building.

The incident unfolded about 1 p.m. Thursday when a resident near the Oak Grove School reported the suspect had just fled his house. Police got information that the suspect entered the school.

The school was closed for vacation but a YMCA program was under way.

Police found 31-year-old Christopher Mclean of Brattleboro hiding in a women’s bathroom. A staff member allowed him into the building because he had a child attending the program. Police say he had no weapon and no children were in danger.

Mclean’s in custody. Police did not release charges and said he hasn’t been arraigned yet. It couldn’t immediately be learned if he has a lawyer.
