JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A 23-month-old baby has died after sustaining severe burns. That’s according to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart.

Grisham-Stewart says Elijah McGee died about 1:30 p.m. Sunday at a Jackson hospital. The child had been badly burned and was taken to the hospital on Thursday.

According to a police statement, doctors said the toddler had obvious signs of child abuse.

The child’s mother, 21-year-old Dymond Clement, and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Quenten Johnson, were arrested and charged with felony child abuse and felony child neglect. They have been denied bond and are being held in the county jail.

Police say the charges are likely to be upgraded with the child’s death.

It was unclear whether Clement and Johnson have attorneys.
