GILDFORD, Mont. (AP) - The last grocery store on the 60-mile stretch of Highway 2 between Chester and Havre has closed.

The Gildford Merc closed over the weekend.

Tax records date the business to 1915, though some argue it’s at least as old as the town, founded in 1910 to serve a wave of homesteaders.

Store owner Laura Hauser tells the Great Falls Tribune (https://gftrib.com/1K11T5B ) that the store couldn’t be sustained in the small town of about 100 people.
