PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a central New Jersey man tried to steal an ambulance while its crew was caring for another person nearby.

Perth Amboy police tell NJ.com (https://bit.ly/168mSEB) that 25-year-old city resident Marco Cabrera was charged with attempted theft of a vehicle and drunken driving.

Authorities say the emergency medical technicians were treating a patient early Sunday when they heard the ambulance’s siren go off. The siren activation is a safety feature that’s activated when the vehicle is shifted out of park.

The crew members ran outside and saw a man in the driver’s seat. The man fled on foot when he saw the crew members, who gave chase and soon captured him.

Cabrera’s bail was set at $10,000 cash, and it wasn’t known Monday if he has retained an attorney.
