NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - A project to connect the two sides of the Natchez bluffs with a walkway should be in place by summer.

City engineer David Gardner tells The Natchez Democrat (https://bit.ly/167Ml11 ) that drawings of the bridge have been approved.

Gardner says the city will construct sidewalks going up to the structure and begin electrical work to install lighting.

The Bridge of Sighs will replicate a now-gone pedestrian bridge at the top of Silver Street. It will allow pedestrians to use the Natchez Trails to cross the street rather than fight traffic.

Some funding has been provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Currently the contractor, Dozer Incorporated, is preparing the site and getting ready to install the footings for the bridge.
