CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A Clovis man has been convicted in a 2013 stabbing and shoplifting case and is facing up to 6 ½ years in prison.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Jeffrey Hyre was found guilty by a jury of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault deadly weapon, simple assault, shoplifting, and criminal damage to property.

Authorities say Hyre fled a Dillard’s store with stolen merchandise on May 27, 2013.

Dillard’s employees and other people chased Hyre into a residential alleyway.

Authorities say Hyre stabbed one person in the face and damaged the windshield of a car during the pursuit.

They say Hyre allegedly was under the influence of drugs.

A judge ordered Hyre be transported to the New Mexico Department of Corrections for a diagnostic evaluation before his sentencing hearing is scheduled.
