PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Prosecutors say a Philadelphia police sergeant gave a fake name and birthdate when he tried to surrender guns at a city precinct house.

Brandon Ruff was charged Monday with presenting false identification to law enforcement when he tried to turn in three guns last August at the 35th District headquarters.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office says a plain-clothed Ruff told an officer his name was Ryan Jones and that the guns belonged to a family member.

Prosecutors say they were actually owned by three different people and one of them had been reported stolen in South Philadelphia in 2010.

Prosecutors say Ruff refused to turn over identification or his carry permit when officers noticed his personal handgun sticking from his waistband.

Information on Ruff’s lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
