PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia police say they suspect drugs as a factor in the death of a man jailed at department headquarters on a driving under the influence charge.

Police say 29-year-old Daniel Wichterman was found unresponsive in a holding cell around 10 p.m. Friday and did not respond to resuscitation attempts.

The Northeast Philadelphia man was pronounced dead about an hour later at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Police spokeswoman Tanya Little says officers believe Wichterman was on some type of narcotic.

Wichterman was taken into custody after police say he crashed his car into another vehicle on Holme Street around 3 p.m. Friday. No injuries were reported.

Another inmate was also being held in the cell where Wichterman was found, but police say he’s not suspected of wrongdoing.

An investigation is continuing.
