TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma legislative leaders are mourning the death of former state Sen. Jerry Smith.

Smith was a Republican who represented the Tulsa area in the state House and Senate for 32 years. He died Friday at age 71.

Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman on Monday said Smith leaves a legacy of public service that stretches back decades. Bingman says Smith was a thoughtful and principled legislator, and his commitment to the state of Oklahoma should serve as an example to others.

Smith was an attorney who was first elected to the state House in 1972. He served there until he was elected to the state Senate in 1980.

Smith served in the Senate until he left the Legislature due to term limits in 2004.

Funeral services are pending.
