FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Several inches of snow, followed by rain and falling temperatures are making for hazardous road conditions on some Long Island highways.

Suffolk County police say a tractor-trailer flipped on its side around 11:30 a.m. Monday on the westbound Long Island Expressway near Dix Hills. Several other accidents were reported in the same area.

Many Long Island schools initially announced delayed openings. Some later decided to close for the day.

The precipitation is supposed to end Monday evening. But the National Weather Service in Upton says a “flash freeze” warning has been issued.

The concern is for icy road conditions again Tuesday. The daytime thermometer may stay in the low 20s. The Department of Transportation issued a 45 mph speed restriction for most Long Island highways, including the LIE.
