LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) - Residents in northern Indiana have started to recover after a winter storm dumped much as 19 inches of snow in the region.

The National Weather Service says 19.3 inches of snow accumulated in LaPorte County after the Sunday storm. About 16 inches accumulated in Elkhart County and 15 inches in St. Joseph County. The LaPorte County sheriff says roads there were treacherous.

Dozens of schools in the area closed Monday and Indiana State Police say roads in northwestern Indiana were slick and covered with snow.

The (Munster) Times reports (https://bit.ly/1z62jiE ) that Indiana Department of Transportation travel advisories were in effect Monday morning in Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Porter and Newton counties.
