ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) - Authorities report looting of two businesses and an attempted robbery at a drug store during a continuing blackout affecting much of the city of Escanaba and surrounding communities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

WLUC-TV https://bit.ly/1tY8gCA ) says the outage happened after an explosion Monday morning at Escanaba Power Plant substation. Crews from the Escanaba Power Plant, the Upper Peninsula Power Co. and other agencies have been working to restore power, which is expected to happen by Tuesday.

The Escanaba Civic Center has been opened as a warming shelter for those needing a warm place to stay until the power is restored.

Police Capt. Jamie Segorski says investigators have suspects in the crimes but didn’t make any immediate arrests. Segorski says police are increasing patrols during the blackout.
