HONOLULU (AP) - A surfer has been taken to the hospital in critical condition after being found unresponsive in the water on Oahu’s North Shore.

Hawaii News Now (https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/ ) reports the surfer was critically injured at Ehukai Beach, also known as Pipeline, on Monday. He was injured after the day’s Volcom Pipe Pro surfing competition wrapped up for the day.

Emergency Medical Services says lifeguards treated a 25-year-old man found unresponsive in the water.

Paramedics took the man to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for north-facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands.
