WARRENTON, Mo. (AP) - A Warren County sheriff’s deputy is on unpaid leave over a fabricated report about a weekend ambush shooting.

The unnamed deputy claimed that he came under fire in the Reifsnider State Forest on Saturday night from an unknown shooter who then fled.

The department says the deputy’s account is false and attributes the Army veteran’s report to post-traumatic stress order and other mental health issues.

A sheriff’s department news release says the deputy and his family are working on a treatment plan.
