SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida woman has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting her estranged husband.

A Seminole County judge sentenced 46-year-old Anita Smithey on Monday. She was convicted of murder in November and faced a possible life sentence.

Prosecutors say Smithey and Robert Cline III had been separated for about three months in May 2010 when they met at Smithey’s Oviedo home for consensual sex. Smithey became angry at some point and shot Cline twice. To make herself appear like a victim, prosecutors say Smithey stabbed herself.

Defense attorneys claim Smithey was being raped and shot Cline in self-defense.

The Orlando Sentinel (https://goo.gl/xvl4ot ) reports that Smithey told police shortly after the shooting that she left Cline because he was abusive, though acknowledged meeting him for sex routinely after their separation.
