BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) - A woman who used her dead mother’s Social Security number to steal $120,000 in payments for 25 years has been sentenced to 15 years of probation.

The Adams County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that 58-year-old Terri Sue Potter also was ordered to pay back the entire amount she stole and perform 100 hours of community service involving the elderly or homeless that does not involve dealing with money. Potter, who was convicted of three felony counts of theft, will serve 90 days of home detention.

The theft was discovered under a program in which people who are 100 years old are contacted to see if they need additional benefits. When employees tried to contact Potter’s mother, they discovered she died in 1987.

Potter used her mother’s Social Security number from 1987 to 2012.
