CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia regional jails chief Joe DeLong plans to leave the position next month.

DeLong announced Monday that he plans to resign as executive director of the Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority on March 31. DeLong says in a news release that he is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. He didn’t give details.

DeLong has served as head of the regional jails system since August 2012. He had served as interim director since January 2012.

During Delong’s tenure, the system reduced the daily fee paid by counties and other government entities to house inmates at the 10 regional jails. Mandatory overtime also was reduced.

DeLong previously served as deputy secretary of Military Affairs and Public Safety. He also served four terms in the House of Delegates.
