BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Agents with the state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control report they found fewer business selling alcohol and tobacco products to underage customers during a recent Mardi Gras crackdown, as compared with a similar crackdown in 2014.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1CRXyMk ) compliance checks were conducted at 860 businesses in seven parishes from Feb. 2 to Feb. 16, resulting in 149 citations issued for alcohol and tobacco sales to underage customers, a 17 percent violation rate. The crackdown in 2014 resulted in a 33 percent violation rate.

ATC Commissioner Troy Hebert says alcohol is a big part of Mardi Gras and it’s great news to see that more and more businesses and servers are selling and serving it responsibly.

Hebert says agents used mostly 16- and 17-year-old undercover operatives.
