LABADIEVILLE, La. (AP) - Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies say a man is accused of fatally stabbing his step-grandson, whose body was found in a yard in Labadieville.

Sheriff Mike Waguespack tells The Courier (https://bit.ly/1Ex6FV2) 61-year-old William O. Thompson was arrested Wednesday night and booked with manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Daquan Rainey.

Waguespack said the sheriff’s office got a call from about 9:14 p.m. Tuesday from a neighbor who said Rainey was lying in the yard, and deputies found him unresponsive upon arrival. He says Rainey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office.

Waguespack says Thompson told detectives he stabbed Rainey after a fight over cigarettes, and Rainey collapsed after running outside.

It was unclear whether Thompson has an attorney.
