LOS ANGELES (AP) - A bomb squad has detonated a suspicious tube that prompted the temporary shutdown of Interstate 5 in Los Angeles.

California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio says the suspicious device was blown up around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the Sun Valley area.

The plastic tube was found shortly after midnight on the southbound side of the freeway.

The CHP and Los Angeles police diverted traffic from all lanes as the bomb squad investigated.

Rubio tells City News Service he doesn’t know why authorities decided to detonate the suspicious device. Investigators did not immediately report if the tube contained explosives or any other noxious substance.

The freeway, a main north-south artery, was closed for about two-and-a-half hours.
